Facing the challenges inherent in working on something radically different, one is quite inclined to use the phrase “outside of the box”.

But what is the definition of thinking/acting/inventing outside of the box? How do you know when you’re there?

I offer this simple concept as  (one part of) the definition:

When what you do is the opposite of what nearly every observer would predict when given the same knowledge.
